How to Share Your Testimony in Three Minutes

A simple four-part way to tell your story of Jesus in about three minutes — before, how He met you, what is changing, and a gentle question — with mistakes to avoid and a worked outline.

Your testimony is the one Gospel tool nobody can argue with. Someone can debate philosophy, history, or the reliability of the Bible, but they cannot tell you what did not happen to you. When Jesus healed a man in the region of the Gerasenes, He did not send him to seminary. He sent him home:

"Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy on you." — Mark 5:19 (WEB)

Most believers freeze not because they have nothing to say, but because they have never put it into words. Here is a simple way to do that in about three minutes — the same four-part framework behind our free Christian testimony builder.

Part 1: Before I followed Jesus

Describe the need, question, or pattern that shaped your life before Christ. Keep it to a few sentences. Aim for something the listener might recognise in themselves: trying to earn worth, numbing pain, carrying guilt, feeling alone in a crowded room, or simply never thinking about God at all.

If you came to faith as a child, this part is still real. Talk about what your heart would be leaning on if it were not for Jesus — approval, control, success — and the moment faith became your own.

Part 2: How Jesus met me

This is the centre of the story, so make Jesus the main character. Who told you about Him? What did you understand about His death and resurrection? What did you actually do — pray, confess, surrender, get baptised?

Be specific enough that a listener could follow the same path. "I realised I could not fix myself, and that Jesus had already paid for what I had done, so I asked Him to forgive me and lead my life" says more than "I got saved at a camp."

Part 3: What is changing now

Share the honest difference Jesus is making — present tense, not finished. Peace where there was anxiety. Freedom from something that used to own you. A new love for people you used to ignore. It is fine to say you still struggle. Honesty is more believable than a highlight reel.

Part 4: Open a door

End with a gentle question, not a closing argument: "Has anything like that ever happened in your life?" or "Where are you at with God these days?" Then stop talking and listen. Our Gospel conversation guide has lines for wherever the conversation goes next.

A worked outline

Here is the shape of a three-minute testimony, without anyone's real details — fill it with yours:

  • Before (about 30 seconds): "For years I measured myself by what people thought of me. When it went well I was proud; when it didn't I fell apart."
  • How Jesus met me (about 60 seconds): "A friend explained that God already knew the worst about me and loved me anyway — that Jesus died for my sin and rose again. I asked Him to forgive me and to be my Lord."
  • What is changing (about 45 seconds): "I still care what people think, but it does not run my life. I know who I belong to."
  • Open a door (about 15 seconds): "Can I ask — what do you think about Jesus?"

Five mistakes that make testimonies hard to hear

  • Church words. "Washed in the blood" and "under conviction" mean nothing to most people. Say what you mean in everyday language — our glossary of faith words can help.
  • All "before," no Jesus. If two minutes are about your past and ten seconds are about Him, the story is about you.
  • Too perfect an "after." Claiming every problem vanished makes your story harder, not easier, to believe.
  • Preaching at the end. A question invites; a lecture closes doors.
  • Never practising. Say it out loud three times this week — to a mirror, a friend, or your phone's voice recorder.

Where to use it

A testimony fits almost anywhere: across a kitchen table, in a text to a friend, or on a sidewalk on a Tuesday night. Revelation says believers overcome "because of the Lamb's blood, and because of the word of their testimony" (Revelation 12:11, WEB). Your story is part of how God wins people.

Ready to write yours? Open the testimony builder — it walks you through each part and keeps your draft on your own device. Then put it to work with the seven-day One Person Challenge, or practise it with us on a Tuesday night in downtown Hamilton.
