"Born again" is one of the best-known phrases in Christianity — and one of the most misunderstood. Some hear it as a label for a certain kind of churchgoer. In the Bible it means something far bigger: a brand-new life that only God can give.
Where the phrase comes from
A respected religious leader named Nicodemus came to Jesus at night. He was moral, educated, and devout. Jesus told him he still needed something he could not produce himself:
"Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can't see God's Kingdom." — John 3:3 (WEB)
Nicodemus was confused — how can a grown man be born a second time? Jesus explained that He was talking about a birth "of water and spirit," and repeated it plainly: "You must be born anew" (John 3:5–7, WEB). The same conversation leads into the most famous verse in the Bible, John 3:16.
What being born again means
Being born again — theologians call it regeneration — is God giving new spiritual life to a person who was spiritually dead. Scripture describes it in several ways:
- A new creation. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17, WEB).
- A new heart. God promised through Ezekiel: "I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you" (Ezekiel 36:26, WEB).
- Becoming God's child. "As many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name" (John 1:12, WEB).
- A living hope. God "caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3, WEB).
What it is not
- Not self-improvement. New birth is not turning over a new leaf. God "saved us... not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy" (Titus 3:5, WEB).
- Not a church membership or a denomination. Every true follower of Jesus is born again, whatever their tradition.
- Not inherited. Being raised in a Christian home is a gift, but each person must trust Jesus for themselves (John 1:13).
- Not earned by a feeling. Emotions vary. New life rests on God's promise.
How someone is born again
You cannot cause your own birth — and you cannot cause your new birth either. It is God's work. But Scripture is clear about how we receive it: "by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works" (Ephesians 2:8–9, WEB).
- Recognise your need. Every person has sinned and fallen short of God.
- Believe the Gospel. Jesus died for your sins, was buried, and rose again.
- Turn to Him. Repent — turn from sin — and trust Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
Many people express that faith in a simple prayer. Our Know Jesus page includes a prayer of surrender and next steps, and IAmReborn.net explains what being born again means without church jargon.
What changes afterward
New birth is the beginning of a new life, not the end of the story. Over time you can expect new desires — to know God, to pray, to read His Word, to love people — and a growing freedom from old patterns. Growth is gradual and sometimes messy. That is normal.
