How to Start an Outreach Group in Your City

You don't need a building, a budget, or a board. Here's the honest, practical guide to launching a weekly outreach where you live — from people who started with a trunk full of sandwiches.

People ask us this almost every week: "How do I start something like this where I live?"

The honest answer is less impressive than you'd hope, and that's the good news. We started with a car, some sandwiches, and no idea what we were doing. Everything else came later — and most of it came from God, not from planning.

What you actually need

Not a building. Not charity status. Not a launch team of twenty. You need three things:

A burden for your city that won't go away.
One or two other people willing to show up with you.
A consistent time and place.

That's genuinely it. Everything else is detail.

The first ninety days

Weeks 1–2: Pray and walk

Before you organise anything, walk your city and pray. Where are people? Where's the need concentrated? Where do you sense God pulling your attention? Ask Him for a specific place, not a general burden.

Weeks 3–4: Find your two or three

Tell a few people what's stirring in you. Not a recruitment pitch — an invitation. The ones who lean in are your team. Jesus sent people out in pairs; there's wisdom in that for safety, encouragement, and endurance.

Weeks 5–6: Pick a night and commit to it

Ours is Tuesday at 7:00 PM. It has been for years. Consistency is the single most underrated ingredient — people need to be able to find you without checking a calendar.

Weeks 7–12: Go, learn, repeat

Start simple. Coffee and sandwiches. Prayer. Conversation. Don't build a programme before you've built a rhythm. You'll learn more in four weeks of actually going than in four months of planning.

A simple structure that works

Here's our Tuesday, which you're welcome to copy outright:

Gather — everyone arrives, we greet newcomers by name.
Pray — worship and prayer together, asking the Spirit to lead us.
Go — out in small teams, never alone. New people can just observe.
Return — share what God did, pray for the people we met, write down follow-ups.

Two hours. Repeatable by anyone. No stage required.

Things we wish we'd known

Guard the volunteers. Burnout is the main killer of outreach, not opposition. Rotate roles, take breaks, celebrate often.

Dignity is non-negotiable. Every person you meet is made in the image of God. Never photograph someone's hardest moment for content. Never make anyone perform gratitude for a meal.

Partner with local churches. You are not a replacement for the church — you're a bridge to it. Some of the strongest fruit we've seen came from handing someone off to a healthy local body.

Track your follow-up from day one. Use Kingdom Base — it's free, and starting the habit early is far easier than retrofitting it after you've lost track of fifty names.
