Why the Whole City Should Gather

There's something a Tuesday night can't do that a city-wide gathering can. Why public, joyful, unashamed worship still matters — and what it does to a city.

We're a small-team ministry. Most weeks it's a handful of us with sandwiches and prayer, working one conversation at a time. We believe deeply in that — the Kingdom advances mostly in ordinary, unphotographed faithfulness.

But there's something a Tuesday night can't do that a city gathering can.

Isolation is the enemy of endurance

When you serve in a hard place long enough, a lie creeps in: we're the only ones. Nothing is changing. Elijah believed it under a broom tree, convinced he was the last one left. God's answer wasn't a sermon — it was a headcount: seven thousand others who hadn't bowed (1 Kings 19:18).

Sometimes you need to see the others. That's what happens at Jesus Festival — a city-wide celebration of Jesus with worship, testimony, and the Gospel in the open air. Someone who has felt like the only Christian in their workplace stands in a crowd and realises they were never alone.

Public faith gives quiet people courage

There's a particular kind of freedom in worshipping outdoors, where anyone can see and hear. It breaks something off believers who have kept their faith carefully private.

We watch it every year: people who'd never hand out a sandwich or pray aloud for a stranger do both within a month of a gathering like this. Boldness is contagious. It travels through rooms — and through parks.

Gatherings are doors, not destinations

A festival is not the finish line. It's one of the widest doors a city has. Someone who would never accept an invitation to a church building will come to a free outdoor event with music and food.
