Who's in Your Oikos? Start With the People Already Around You

Before you go to the nations, look at your phone. God has already placed a mission field around you — your oikos. Here's how to name it, pray for it, and love it well.

There's a word the New Testament uses that most of us have never been taught: oikos. It's the Greek word for household — but it means far more than the people under your roof. It's your relational world. Family, friends, coworkers, neighbours, the barista who knows your order.

When the Gospel spread through the book of Acts, it moved along these lines constantly. Cornelius "called together his relatives and close friends" (Acts 10:24). The Philippian jailer believed "together with his whole household" (Acts 16:34). The Gospel travelled through relationships, not just crowds.

Your mission field is closer than you think

We love street outreach. We do it every week. But here's something we tell every volunteer: the streets are not more sacred than your dinner table. Most people who come to Christ do so through someone they already trust.

Which means the question isn't "will I ever be a missionary?" You already are one. The question is whether you're being intentional about the field you're standing in.

"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit — fruit that will last." — John 15:16

Name them

Here's the exercise. Get a piece of paper — or open Oikos Map, a free tool built for exactly this — and write down the people in your life who don't yet know Jesus.

Not "the lost." Names. Actual names.

Something happens when the abstract becomes specific. "I should evangelise more" produces guilt. "I'm praying for Mike, and I'm going to invite him for coffee on Thursday" produces action. Then do three simple things

Pray for them by name, consistently

This is the work. Before strategy, before conversation, before invitation. Ask God to soften hearts and to give you open doors and the courage to walk through them. Then watch how often He answers that second part faster than you'd like.

Move toward them

Proximity is a ministry. Say yes to the invitation. Host the meal. Show up to the thing you'd normally skip. You cannot influence people you never see.

Be honest about Jesus in normal conversation

Not a sermon — just stop editing Him out. "I was praying about that this morning." "Church was really good yesterday." Small, honest mentions do more than one big dramatic conversation, because they tell the truth about who you actually are.

When someone says yes
