Your Work Is a Mission Field

You spend most of your waking hours at work. That's not time away from ministry — it's the assignment. How to carry the Kingdom into your job, your business, and your calendar.

If you work full time, you'll spend roughly 90,000 hours of your life at your job. Most of us have quietly filed that away as the part of life that isn't ministry — the thing we do so we can fund and attend the real thing on evenings and weekends.

Scripture doesn't split life that way.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." — Colossians 3:23

Your desk is an altar. Your calendar is a discipleship document. The people you work beside are your oikos — probably the largest group of not-yet-believers you'll ever have consistent access to.

Three ways your work preaches

1. Excellence

Doing good work is a witness before you say a word. Sloppiness in the name of "it's just a job" undercuts everything we claim about a God of order and beauty. Be the person others are relieved to be assigned to.

2. Integrity when it costs you

Anyone can be honest when it's free. The moment your honesty costs you money, a client, or credit — that's the moment people find out what you actually believe. Those moments are rare and they are loud.

3. Presence with people

Learn names. Notice when someone's struggling. Ask the follow-up question. Offer to pray — you'd be astonished how rarely that's refused, even by people with no faith at all.

If you build or run something

Business is one of the most under-leveraged tools in the Kingdom. Profit can fund the Gospel. Jobs can dignify people. A company culture can preach to everyone inside it.

Don't wait for a "call to ministry"

One of the most freeing things we ever realised: you are not waiting for permission. The commissioning already happened.

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." — 1 Peter 2:9

Royal priesthood. That's you — the tradesperson, the nurse, the teacher, the developer, the driver. Not a support act for the professionals.

Start Monday

Pick one coworker. Pray for them by name this week — Oikos Map is a free way to keep that list in front of you. Do your work as though Jesus commissioned it, because He did. And when the door opens, walk through it gently.

Then, if you want to put your hands to something in your city, come out on a Tuesday. Faith at work and faith on the streets are the same faith — just different rooms.
